The five-story, red brick building at nine-twenty Sacramento Street is identified by its facade and its history as the Donaldina Cameron House. Built in nineteen-o-eight after the previous structure was dynamited to create a firebreak during the nineteen-o-six earthquake, the facility was designed by architect Julia Morgan. Originally known as the Occidental Mission Home, it functioned as a refuge for thousands of Chinese women and girls escaping domestic servitude and sex trafficking throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
