Abandoned Grain Silos

Rising one hundred and ninety feet above the shore of Islais Creek, these abandoned grain silos at Pier Ninety stand as a massive, concrete landmark of San Francisco’s industrial past. Built in nineteen eighteen, the structures were designed to store grain arriving by rail, which workers then loaded onto cargo ships for international export. For decades, the terminal served as a vital hub for regional trade, even facilitating the transport of barley to Russia during droughts in the nineteen seventies.
