The Potrero Generating Station is marked by a three-hundred-foot-tall smokestack that rises above the central waterfront. For over a century, this site provided electricity to San Francisco, at its peak generating about one-third of the city’s power. The facility sits at the edge of the Dogpatch neighborhood, occupying land that has served industrial roles from shipbuilding to coal-powered electricity generation since the eighteen-nineties.
