The Black Hawk was a jazz club that operated from nineteen forty-nine until nineteen sixty-three at the corner of Turk and Hyde Streets in the Tenderloin. Its intimate interior became a premier destination for live recordings, capturing performances by jazz luminaries including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Cal Tjader. The club featured a unique arrangement where underage patrons could listen to live music from behind a chicken-wire fence.
