Aliʻiōlani Hale

Aliʻiōlani Hale is defined by its central clock tower and the prominent gold-leaf statue of Kamehameha the Great standing in its courtyard. King Kamehameha the Fifth commissioned the building in the eighteen seventies, originally intending it to be his royal palace. He soon realized, however, that the growing government of the Hawaiian Kingdom needed a functional administrative home more than another royal residence. He altered the plans, and construction moved forward for a government office building instead.
