The African Meeting House stands at forty-six Joy Street as a modest brick building, distinguished by its simple Federal-style architecture and its history as the oldest church structure in the United States built by African Americans. Dedicated in eighteen oh six, it was constructed after the Black community in Boston faced persistent segregation in white-run churches, where congregants were relegated to back pews and denied a vote in church affairs.
