Boston Public Garden Foot Bridge

The Public Garden Foot Bridge is a gray stone and steel structure that arches over the lagoon in the center of the park. When it opened on June first, eighteen sixty-seven, it held the distinction of being the shortest functioning suspension bridge in the world. Designed by architect William G. Preston and engineer Clemens Herschel, the bridge utilized a pioneering eyebar suspension system, where flat metal bars were linked together through eyeholes to support the deck.
