Statue of William Ellery Channing

The statue of William Ellery Channing stands within a marble canopy at the corner of Boylston and Arlington Streets. Dedicated in nineteen oh three, this monument to the influential Unitarian theologian was the first statue of a clergyman ever erected in Boston. Sculptor Herbert Adams designed the piece to depict Channing in his ecclesiastical robes, holding a Bible and posed as if about to deliver one of his sermons.
