Commonwealth Avenue is distinguished by a wide, central grassy park known as the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, which stretches as a green spine through the heart of the Back Bay. Designed in the eighteen fifties by architect Arthur Gilman, this boulevard was part of an ambitious urban project to create new land from the tidal flats of the Charles River. Trains once arrived every forty-five minutes to deposit gravel for the project, slowly building the foundation for the elegant houses that line the street today.
