Kings Chapel Burying Ground

historic

King's Chapel Burying Ground is the oldest cemetery in Boston, established in sixteen thirty. You can identify the site by its collection of weathered, dark slate headstones, many carved with macabre symbols like skulls, crossbones, and images of death that reflect the beliefs of the city's first Puritan settlers. Though it shares a name and a boundary with the adjacent King's Chapel, the burying ground is an entirely separate municipal property that served as the city's only graveyard for its first thirty years.
