First & Battery Portal Porch

The First and Battery Portal Porch is a small public space built on the site of the former south entrance to the Battery Street Tunnel. You can identify this area by the layout of its eighteen hundred square feet, which occupies the space where highway traffic once emerged from underground. This tunnel, constructed in the nineteen fifties, originally linked city streets to the old Alaskan Way Viaduct.
