The Historic Chinatown Gate is a forty-five-foot-tall red and gold steel archway that spans South King Street near Fifth Avenue South. It is a modern example of a traditional pai-lau, or ceremonial gate, topped with intricate ceramic figures like dragons and phoenixes. Eight thousand individual ceramic tiles, manufactured in southern China, adorn the structure to provide color and traditional ornamentation.
