The Rudolfsturm sits at the entrance to the high valley of the Salzberg, overlooking Hallstatt from its position on the mountainside. It is a stone tower with a medieval origin, built between twelve eighty-two and twelve eighty-four by Duke Albrecht the First of Austria. Named for his father, King Rudolf the First, the structure began its life as a defensive fortification intended to protect the valuable shafts and infrastructure of the local salt mines.
