Wolfengasse

Wolfengasse is a narrow, historic alleyway tucked into the steep hillside of Hallstatt. Its name honors the Wolfen family, local salt traders who built houses here when the town’s prosperity depended entirely on the massive salt deposits carved from the mountains above. While much of the village was leveled by a fire in seventeen fifty, the stone ground-floor vaults of the buildings along this lane survived, maintaining their original medieval structure.
