Die Kapelle

St. Michael’s Chapel sits on the rocky hillside behind the Catholic parish church, identifiable by the two stone lanterns that stand guard outside its entrance. This twelfth-century structure serves as the home to one of the most distinctive customs in the Alpine region: the Hallstatt ossuary, or Bone House. Because the village is squeezed between steep mountains and the lake, burial space has always been in short supply.
