Friedhof Hallstatt

The Friedhof Hallstatt is a small, mountainside cemetery defined by the rows of gabled wooden grave markers that stand against the backdrop of the Alps and the lake. Because the village is tightly squeezed between steep mountains and the water, the burial ground has historically lacked the space to expand. To manage this, the community developed a practice where graves were held for only about ten to fifteen years before being cleared to make room for new burials.
