The Gouden-Handrei is a canal defined by the calm reflections of brick facades, stepped gables, and stone arches upon the water. It was excavated during the twelfth century to follow the path of the original city walls built after the assassination of the Flemish Count Charles the Good. While the area now offers a quiet escape from the busy city center, the waterway traces the line of what were once vital medieval fortifications.
