The Coulée verte René-Dumont rises above the twelfth arrondissement as an elevated ribbon of greenery, stretching four point seven kilometers from the back of the Opéra Bastille toward the Bois de Vincennes. The parkway occupies the iron-and-stone path of the former Vincennes railway, which carried passengers between the Place de la Bastille and the eastern suburbs from eighteen fifty-nine until the line closed in nineteen sixty-nine.
