Grave of Marquis De Lafayette

historic

The grave of the Marquis de Lafayette is marked by a distinctive, permanently flying American flag, which remains a fixture above his final resting place within the quiet, private grounds of the Picpus Cemetery. Lafayette, the French general who served under George Washington during the American Revolution, died in eighteen thirty-four and requested to be buried here in this Parisian cemetery. He chose this specific spot to lie beside his wife, Adrienne, whose own mother, sister, and grandmother were executed during the Reign of Terror and interred in the cemetery's mass graves.
