A low granite slab in division ninety-six of the Père Lachaise Cemetery marks the resting place of Amedeo Modigliani. The Italian painter and sculptor, known for his portraits and nudes featuring elongated, stylized forms, died of tubercular meningitis in Paris on January twenty-fourth, nineteen twenty. He was thirty-five years old, having spent much of his career in the Montparnasse neighborhood.
