The tomb of Oscar Wilde is a massive, twenty-ton sculpture carved from a single block of Hopton Wood stone. It depicts a winged, sphinx-like figure in flight, designed by the sculptor Jacob Epstein. Since nineteen fifty, the tomb has also held the ashes of Robert Ross, Wilde’s former lover and literary executor, who originally purchased this burial plot at Père Lachaise Cemetery after Wilde’s death in nineteen hundred.
