Place des Victoires

The Place des Victoires is a circular square in central Paris where six streets meet, recognized by the grand equestrian statue of King Louis the Fourteenth standing at its heart. Built in the late seventeenth century, the square was commissioned by the marshal François de la Feuillade to honor the king's military success in the Treaty of Nijmegen. He employed the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart to design a uniform ring of palatial buildings around the center, creating a dedicated stage for a monument to royal power.
