The Church of Saint-Eugène-Sainte-Cécile is defined by an exterior of modest, sober stone that hides a radical engineering experiment within. Built between eighteen fifty-four and eighteen fifty-five, it stands as the first church in France constructed entirely around a load-bearing iron framework. This structural choice allowed architects Louis-Auguste Boileau and Louis-Adrien Lusson to create a vast, airy interior with exceptionally slender columns, bypassing the need for heavy stone buttresses.
