Place Paul Verlaine is the highest point on the Butte-aux-Cailles, sitting sixty-three meters above sea level in the thirteenth arrondissement. You can identify the square by the red-brick facade of the local swimming pool and the constant trickle of people filling water bottles at the public fountain. This fountain taps into an artesian well, reaching a depth of five hundred eighty-two meters, which first brought water to the surface in nineteen oh four after decades of failed drilling attempts.
