The Sorbonne Chapel is defined by its soaring dome, which rises above a high drum and is visible from the surrounding Latin Quarter. Completed in sixteen forty-two, this structure was commissioned by Cardinal Richelieu, the chief minister to King Louis the Thirteenth, to serve as both a university chapel and his own final resting place. Designed by the architect Jacques Lemercier, it is recognized as a masterpiece of French classical architecture and was one of the first buildings in France to feature a dome of this Roman-inspired form.
