Le Carreau du Temple

The Carreau du Temple is a large covered market defined by a monumental, industrial structure of glass, brick, and cast iron. Completed in eighteen sixty-three during the reign of Napoleon the Third, the building stands near the former site of the Knights Templar enclosure. The medieval order once held the land, and the site later gained notoriety as the prison where the French royal family was held during the Revolution.
