Le Village Saint-Paul is a labyrinth of interconnected courtyards hidden behind nondescript entrances near the Church of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis. These cobblestone passages and old facades sit on ground that once held the fourteenth-century gardens of the Hôtel Saint-Pol, a residence built for King Charles the Fifth. While the royal palace was dismantled by the sixteenth century, the site remained a center for artisans and working-class residents for generations.
