The Maison de Victor Hugo occupies the second floor of the Hôtel de Rohan-Guéménée, a building distinguished by the symmetrical red brick and cream stone facade that defines the entire Place des Vosges. Victor Hugo moved into this apartment in eighteen thirty-two, at age thirty, and lived there for sixteen years before his exile from France.
