The Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville is distinguished by its vast, open pedestrian square facing the elaborate Neo-Renaissance facade of the Paris City Hall, a building adorned with hundreds of statues of historical figures. This site has been the administrative center of the city since thirteen fifty-seven, when Étienne Marcel acquired the original meeting house here.
