The house at number fifty-one Rue de Montmorency is identified by its stone facade, which is carved with musician angels and figures framed in basket-handle arches. Built in fourteen oh seven, it is the oldest dated stone house in Paris. Nicolas Flamel, a wealthy manuscript seller and bourgeois, commissioned the building following the death of his wife, Pernelle. While legend credits Flamel with discovering the Philosopher's Stone and achieving immortality, he was a real historical figure who funded numerous hospitals and religious institutions.
