Chapelle expiatoire

The Chapelle expiatoire is defined by a neoclassical facade featuring a pediment and a row of Doric columns, set within an enclosed, cloister-like courtyard. This memorial, built between eighteen fifteen and eighteen twenty-six under the direction of King Louis the Eighteenth, stands on the former site of the Madeleine cemetery. It was here that the bodies of King Louis the Sixteenth and Queen Marie-Antoinette were initially interred following their executions during the French Revolution.
