National Academy of Medicine (France)

The National Academy of Medicine is a learned society housed in an Art Nouveau building at sixteen Rue Bonaparte. King Louis XVIII established the institution in eighteen twenty at the urging of Baron Antoine Portal, intending for it to serve as a high-level advisory body on public health, epidemics, and medical research. After moving between several temporary sites, including a mansion on the Rue de Poitiers and a chapel on the Rue des Saints-Pères, the academy settled into this permanent headquarters designed by architect Justin Rochet, which opened in nineteen oh two.
