Rue des Degrés

The Rue des Degrés is the shortest street in Paris, measuring just under six meters long. It is not a street in the traditional sense, but a staircase of fourteen steps that links the Rue de Cléry and the Rue Beauregard. The passage was created in sixteen thirty-four following the demolition of the wall of Charles V. The significant elevation difference between the two streets exists because of the debris and refuse that residents dumped outside the old city walls over centuries, eventually forming a mound that reached the height of the fortifications.
