The Lenbachhaus is defined by its striking facade of metal tubes made of a copper and aluminum alloy, which sits alongside a historic villa built in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace. This building began as the private residence and studio of the portrait painter Franz von Lenbach, who constructed it between eighteen eighty-seven and eighteen ninety-one with the architect Gabriel von Seidl. Lenbach, a celebrated figure in the nineteenth-century Munich art scene, designed the villa to serve as a grand stage for his work and his social life.
