Staatliche Antikensammlungen

The Staatliche Antikensammlungen is easily identified by its grand, neoclassical design featuring eight towering Corinthian columns across its front portico and a steep, wide staircase that leads up from the Königsplatz. This building was commissioned by King Ludwig the First of Bavaria and completed in eighteen forty-eight, intended to serve as a public exhibition hall for art and industry. Architect Georg Friedrich Ziebland designed it as a purposeful counterpoint to the Glyptothek, the sculpture museum that sits directly across the square.
