Karlstor

The Karlstor is a medieval city gate characterized by an open central archway framed by two neo-Gothic towers. Constructed in the fourteenth century as part of the city’s second defensive wall, it was originally called the Neuhauser Tor because it stood on the path toward the village of Neuhausen. In seventeen ninety-one, city officials renamed the structure to honor Elector Karl Theodor, although the public continued to use the name of the adjacent square, the Stachus, in defiance of the ruler.
