Holy Church of Saint George of Lycabettus

The Holy Church of Saint George sits at the summit of Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in central Athens. This small, single-aisle, whitewashed basilica is easily recognized by its bright exterior and its prominent position above the city skyline. Built in the late eighteenth century, it replaced an earlier Byzantine-era structure, which itself sat upon foundations traditionally linked to an ancient temple of Zeus.
