Plateia Exarcheion sits at the center of a neighborhood that has defined itself through decades of radical politics and intellectual life. The square itself is recognizable as a gathering place where the surrounding café terraces spill out onto the pavement and the walls nearby are covered in dense layers of political street art. Originally named for a nineteenth-century businessman who opened a large general store in the area, the space grew into a home for students, artists, and activists.
