Syntagma Square is identifiable by the large, neoclassical Hellenic Parliament building that looms over its eastern side. Formerly the Old Royal Palace, this structure was built between eighteen thirty-six and eighteen forty-three for King Otto, the first king of modern Greece. The square itself is the central political and social hub of Athens, laid out in the eighteen thirties to serve as a grand promenade for the new capital.
