The Hungarian National Gallery occupies the central wings of Buda Castle, a massive complex perched on Castle Hill above the Danube River. You can pick it out by the great dome that rises from the center of the palace, a silhouette that has defined this skyline for generations. Established in nineteen fifty-seven, the institution serves as the country’s primary museum for fine art produced by Hungarian creators, housing everything from medieval stone carvings and Gothic altarpieces to twentieth-century modernism.
