Rumbach Street Synagogue

The Rumbach Street Synagogue stands out for its Moorish Revival facade, which features horizontal stripes of alternating red and yellow brickwork flanked by two slim turrets. Built between eighteen sixty-nine and eighteen seventy-two, this building was one of the earliest commissions for the architect Otto Wagner. He was only twenty-seven years old when he won the design competition, long before he became a leading figure in the European Secessionist movement. The interior is defined by a unique octagonal prayer hall designed to evoke the spirit of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, with its central dome rising above gilded pillars and vibrant, geometric wall patterns.
