The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library is distinguished by its ornate Neo-Baroque architecture, characterized by gilded interiors, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and heavy wood paneling. Housed within the former Wenckheim Palace, the library stands in the center of the city as a meeting point between aristocratic history and a modern public institution. It was commissioned by Count Frigyes Wenckheim and his wife, Countess Krisztina Wenckheim, and built by architect Artúr Meinig between eighteen eighty-six and eighteen eighty-nine.
