Red Fort

landmark

The Red Fort is defined by its massive, towering walls of red sandstone, which reach heights of up to thirty-three meters and enclose a vast, octagonal complex. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned this fortress-palace in sixteen thirty-nine when he moved his capital from Agra to this site, which he named Shahjahanabad. Designed by Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the same architect responsible for the Taj Mahal, the fort functioned as the primary residence for Mughal emperors for nearly two hundred years.
