The Jama Masjid is defined by its massive red sandstone and white marble exterior, which rises on a stone platform more than thirty steps above the surrounding streets. As the principal mosque of Delhi, it served as the imperial place of worship for Mughal emperors, including its builder, Shah Jahan. The emperor commissioned this structure for his new capital, Shahjahanabad, with construction lasting from sixteen forty-four to sixteen fifty-six.
