Dotonbori is defined by the high-contrast glow of massive neon signs reflecting off the dark surface of a canal. This waterway, which cuts through the center of Osaka, began as an ambitious construction project in sixteen twelve led by the canal administrator Nariyasu Doton. The work stalled during the Siege of Osaka in sixteen fifteen, when Doton was killed in battle, but his associates finished the project that same year.
