The Osaka Shochikuza Theatre is defined by a massive, white-columned archway that rises above the street, a Neo-Renaissance facade that famously earned the nickname "Triumphal Arch of Dotonbori." When it opened in nineteen twenty-three, this building stood as the first steel-frame, reinforced concrete theater in Japan. Designed by the architect Tokusaburo Kimura, who modeled the structure after the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, it was built specifically to host Western films and musical revues.
