Amerikamura is identified by the sight of a small-scale Statue of Liberty peering down from a rooftop, overseeing a dense grid of narrow streets. Often called Amemura by locals, this neighborhood in the Chuo district emerged in the late nineteen sixties and early nineteen seventies when young entrepreneurs began converting old warehouses and lumberyards into shops. These businesses specialized in selling vintage clothing, jeans, and records imported from the West Coast of the United States.
