The Hankyu Umeda Main Store defines the skyline of the Umeda district with a massive structure that houses one of the largest floor spaces of any department store in Japan. It occupies the site of the original Hankyu Umeda Railway Station, a location that holds a specific place in the history of retail. In nineteen twenty-nine, the founder of the Hankyu Corporation, Ichizo Kobayashi, opened a department store directly within this rail terminal, establishing a business model that paired mass transit with retail space for the first time.
