Casa del Monifato

The Casa del Monifato is a sparse, reddish building located in the port town of Sisal, recognizable by the stone figure of a bearded man mounted on its roof. A plaque at the corner of the structure identifies it as the property of Juan de Orduña and his wife, Gerónima Ortiz, and bears the date fifteen eighty-five. This makes the house one of the oldest recorded colonial residences in the Americas, with a construction history that predates the well-known Casa de Montejo in Mérida.
