Restos de decoraciones mayas

Mérida sits atop the remains of the ancient Maya city of Ichcanzihó. Traces of this history exist within the colonial architecture of the city center. Builders frequently repurposed stones and decorative carvings from destroyed Maya temples to reinforce the walls and foundations of new churches and civic buildings.
